“The ability to understand culture and cultures, respond to them with sensitivity and act consciously – in my opinion, this is the greatest potential of semiotics.”

Peter loves probing beyond the visual surface of things. Semiotics provides him with the change of perspective necessary for not only understanding the signs of the times, but also actively shaping them. As a brand consultant and semiotician he specialises in brand identities and imagery. As a lecturer he teaches image theory at the Bern University of the Arts and the School of Design in Bern. His own cultural experiences in the former East Germany (GDR), the Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland have sharpened his senses and fuelled his interest in the meaning of signs. In his free time, Peter is on the board of a Swiss NGO working to preserve the forest and livelihoods in Madagascar.

What can applied semiotics do?

“Applied semiotics help us investigate everyday signs and symbols, marvel at the complexity of culture and make the world a better place one day at a time. This is particularly important in today’s world, where the cultural divides seem to once again be growing.”
